After participating in U.S. series such as CSI Miami, Hawaii 5.0 and The List, Mexican actress Martha Higareda returns to Latin American TV as the leading female in the new series El Mariachi, produced by Teleset and Sony Pictures Television and set to premiere on March 10th at 8pm on AXN.The actress told PRODU that Sony is trying to fuse key elements of TV: Mexico has always been recognized for its telenovelas, and lately, when you think of series, you think of Colombia. Now, Sony hopes to use Mexico as a launching pad for Latin America, and is fusing a Mexican and a Colombian production company, in addition to having the support of Sony U.S. The result is a quality product with a cinematic feel.Higareda said this change in format is gaining popularity in TV, arguing that there will always be an audience for telenovelas, but there are other people who are used to watching American series and now can enjoy the same format but made in Mexico. Its great to have a Latino product with American quality.Lastly, Higareda said she would consider doing novelas again as long as she has a good story. In the meantime, shes focused on El Mariachi, where she plays the role of Celeste, the protagonist girlfriend. Shes also planning her own projects for TV and her possible leading role in the series Diablo Guardián, based on the book by Xavier Velasco and co-produced by RTI Colombia and Televisa.
